Our Thanksgiving Day -- 2010....

Each year, since Marc and I have been married, we've hosted Thanksgiving for both of our families.
This year, however, we decided we needed a "break" from hosting. Marc's parents had some other plans (however, we'll be getting together with them on Sunday evening). And, my mom graciously agreed to host Thanksgiving this year.
So, it ended up being the three of us, my parents, and my brother and sister-in-law (Joel and Amber) along with their three girls (Grace, Natalie, and Maddie).
Marc fried the turkey, along with my dad and brother's assistance.
Soooooo, because of the turkey frying (and the fact that we own the turkey fryer), the three of us got to my parents' early in the day.
Marc and my dad got the turkey fryer going....It was a cold Thanksgiving this year (relative to Kansas); therefore, you'll notice in the outdoor photos, everybody's bundled.
Here's a pic of Marc -- checking the temperature of the oil BEFORE the turkey ever went in.
Soon, once the oil was fully heated to the appropriate temperature, Marc and my dad got the turkey going.
Marc's standing "back" from the fryer in this photo to avoid getting further splattered by grease....At this point, he had already gotten some grease splattered on his jeans. Fortunately, this wonderful wife was able to get the jeans cleaned the next day.
At this point, inside, Luke made it well known to me that he wanted to be outside with the guys. I told him that he HAD to wear his coat, mittens, and a stocking hat. Luke completely obeyed on this one. I was very proud of his obedience. He insisted on wearing Marc's Texas Longhorns cap, and so, he wore it OVER his stocking hat -- very creative for a 2 year-old boy.
I knew Marc and my dad would keep him away from the turkey fryer....Luke did a GREAT job at again, obeying.
Soon, my brother and sister-in-law and their girls arrived. Joel (my brother) stayed outside while all of the girls hung out inside.
It's a tradition in our family that outside, while the turkey is frying, the guys snack on chips and dip (they call it pre-eating). In the past, Marc's mom has made the dip. I took that over this year. They had it all set up in the garage.
At this point, Luke came in and told me he was ready to eat. Knowing that it would be a bit before all of the food was ready, I went on ahead and let him eat (I figure that was easier than explaining to a hungry two year-old that he needed to wait for Thanksgiving). Luke, being the independent one that he is, had no problem eating by himself at the table.
Soon, though, all of the food was ready. This picture doesn't do it justice, but there truly was a lot of food for a not very big family gathering.
We really have so much to be thankful for.
Natalie, our three year-old niece, was really ready to eat. She beat us all to the table.
Soon, we all joined her, and even Luke sat with us for a bit and ate a bit more despite having already eaten.
And, in case you're wondering -- Marc, the big eater, did not go hungry on this day.

After we all finished eating, we all just hung out while food digested.
My mom has this goofy pair of glasses, and we all laughed as Luke kept putting them on.
And, of course, Marc got in on the goofiness....Like Father, Like Son....
Toward late afternoon, it was obvious that Luke was getting tired. (Note -- I'm usually a bit of a "Sleep Nazi" with Luke's sleeping schedule. Truly, this was the first time in Luke's life that he'd gone without a nap....He did VERY WELL, despite that fact).
So, Marc hung out with him for a bit on the couch -- to wind down a bit.
After awhile, we got everything together and headed home....Luke was out fairly quickly in the car. How sweet!
It was a fun day with family, and as I previously mentioned, we have sooooo much to be thankful for.
The amount of food we had at our meal was borderline embarrassing as I know people in other parts of the world would LOVE to have that.
I feel like I've been a bit glum lately -- for all kind of reasons -- of which I won't bore all of you on this blog.
On days like Thanksgiving, my "glumness" is embarrassing. I really have no reason to complain. My life's very good.
I'm so thankful to God for sending His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins. Boy -- I most certainly need Jesus in my life, and I'm thankful I have Him in my life.
I'm so thankful for my husband, Marc. He's really a wonderful husband to me, and I know I don't always show how grateful I am for him.
I'm also thankful for our son, Luke. There are days I feel like I only gripe at him. But, almost everyday now, I realize that I'm as imperfect as he is, and I'm often trying to make him the perfect little human. None of us are perfect, and Luke's no exception to that.
I'm slowly learning to love him the way he is, and I'm learning to not expect absolute perfection out of him.
What a WONDERFUL gift Luke is....I vaguely remember what life was like before him, and that's O.K....Life certainly is wonderful with him.
I hope I cherish each day with Marc and Luke :)

Mulching Leaves....
Before I even begin this post, I must remind everybody that Luke LOVES lawnmowers and has for quite some time now.
a) Luke is obsessed with seeing them and people using them when we go out on walks.
b) When we go to other people's houses, Luke has been known to "ask" to see their mowers. Fortunately, quite a few have granted him that wish.
c) Luke frequently pushes his own little mower around the house.
d) My very good friend, Tammy, made Luke, for his birthday, a little book of pictures of mowers (and trucks, etc.)....Luke looks at this little book frequently still.

This afternoon, Marc was able to leave work a bit early for Thanksgiving. So, Marc arrived home right before Luke got up from his nap.
Shortly after getting home, Marc mentioned to me that he quickly wanted to go outside to mulch some leaves with the lawnmower (our yard was covered with leaves and needed to be cleaned up).
Luke got up. Marc went outside. My brother called me, and I was chatting with him for a bit.
During my phone conversation, Luke heard Marc "fire up" the lawnmower outside. My brother can fully verify this, but at that point, our phone conversation was most definitely D.O.N.E.
That would be because at this point, Luke immediately started crying to go outside. He immediately, while crying and whining, ran to get his own mower to go outside.
I told him he needed to get some warm clothes on and get a jacket, hat, and mittens on.
Luke OBEYED completely....Luke knew that was the only way he'd get to go outside.
Let's just say from that point on -- Marc had a little helper. And, it was pretty cute to watch from my standpoint.
(And, in case you're wondering -- that's our neighbor's house in the background....our house is the blue one that you'll see in upcoming photos).
And, onto the side of the house and to the backyard....
And, upon finishing the project, both guys had to empty out the oil from their mowers to "winterize."
(And yes, our ugly yellow and red shed does NOT match out blue house -- But, I won't complain....At least we have a shed that does function).
Oh, how I LOVE that one of my favorite things in life right now is watching Luke really want to imitate and be just like his Daddy!

And, because I did bombard this blog with Luke photos last week, I'll keep it to one photo today. This photo was actually taken last Friday (the day Marc got home).
As you well know (if you've been reading this blog regularly), Luke REALLY likes hats -- especially Marc's hats.
While some would probably deem eating at the table with hats on inappropriate, we do let Luke do that some. HOWEVER, he is not allowed to eat with certain hats -- mainly hats that Marc still wears (we don't need them ruined with messy eating).
Luke does know this, and he obeys that rule quite well.
The compromise -- he can wear his own hats (he does have a couple) OR he can wear old visors of our's.
This particular day -- Luke chose to wear TWO visors while eating lunch.
(And, you'll notice TWO sippy cups in this picture -- that would be because Luke, almost always, insists on milk and water with his meal. Yep -- persnickity boy).
(And, because Marc was out of town -- that would be the reason for ALL of the random Luke photos -- photos for Marc to see of Luke while on the road).

Luke Randoms, Part 5....

If you read YESTERDAY'S POST, you might remember that I mentioned that this Mama needed to get out of the house for a bit.
Soooooo, after Luke's nap, Luke first had a bit of a snack -- at the dining room table. He's been in to doing that lately. You'll notice he's in his pajamas. He's also been into taking a nap in his pajamas. Though it's one more thing to do before his nap (he might just be trying to stall), I actually don't mind. I'm finding that he actually sleep a little better in the afternoon this way. I guess it's more cozy.
Then, we quickly went for a ride. Actually, there was a purpose. I needed to pick up some photos I had printed off at Walgreen's. We also needed some more milk and bananas -- perfect reasons to just get out if needed.
It's not very often AT ALL that we let Luke have food in the car (we're mean like that). But yesterday, I let him take some crackers with him. Luke did EXCELLENT -- NOT dropping one cracker in the car.
This morning, I got to do one of my least favorite things which ultimately turned into one of my favorite things.
I had planned on taking Luke to a Parents as Teachers playdate. It started at 9:30 -- not early at all. Normally, Luke gets up anywhere between 7:45 and 8:30. But, at 8:45 this morning, he was still asleep. So, I went in and woke him up (one of my LEAST favorite things to do).
But, it ultimately was a good thing because then, I got to take a photo of him still sleeping (one of my favorite things).
And yes, Luke sleeps with approximately 5.5 Billion things in his crib.
Also, this morning, Luke, once again, ate breakfast in his "Choo-Choo" hat. This morning, I also had the privilege of watching Luke eat breakfast in his sunglasses.
(And yes, we do realize that someday, Luke will have to learn that it's not always appropriate to eat in his hat and sunglasses).
I've successfully posted 5 random days in a row....There's no guarantee about 6! So, I hope you've enjoyed! Thanks for enduring.

Luke Randoms, Part 4....

Today, it's dreary, cloudy, a bit windy, yucky, rainy, and even for a bit -- snowy.
So, we've been inside all day -- really had no reason to go out (though, honestly, I'm going to find a reason a little later -- this Mama needs out for a bit).
Lily was here this morning. Lily is the almost 2 year-old little girl who stays here 1-2 mornings a week (depending on time of year). She is the daughter of some friends of our's....Joel and Kendall.
Here are a bunch of "random" photos from this morning and early afternoon.
Luke, once again, ate breakfast in his "Choo-Choo" hat. He also ate with a few assorted cars (also becoming the norm).
After he finished a decent breakfast, I allowed him to have some juice (he doesn't get juice with breakfast because that's probably all he'd have)....I actually don't mind him having a sippy cup in the family room, but for some reason lately, he's been into having juice in the kitchen. But, this time, he chose to be out of his booster seat.
Here are a few of the things the kids did this morning to entertain themselves. Sometimes, I do admire their ability to come up with things to do. Other times, it's clear they're bored, and I need to be a bit more intentional in coming up with things to do.
Lily -- playing with blocks....She actually did this for quite awhile.
Lily -- waving a flag....Luke did this as well, but I didn't get a photo. Also, if you notice that Lily is carrying a blanket -- it's one of Luke's. She insisted on having a blanket this morning, probably because she saw Luke with him blanket.
Both Luke and Lily tend to like to play with seatbelt buckles (on the booster seats). This morning was no exception, but I do think that Lily beat out Luke on this one this morning (Luke wasn't as interested in that today).
Both kids had their mid-morning snack of cheese crackers and water.
Luke, like a true boy, insisted on rolling his cars through the chair slats and making the cars CRASH to the floor -- over and over again.
Lily played with the telephone -- I think she called her Daddy maybe nothing short of 50 times -- VERY CUTE!
Toward the end of the morning, I turned on one of our Praise Baby DVDs....Lily didn't really care about it. Luke, on the other hand, settled down for a bit with his blanket and thumb :)
After Lily left at noon, Luke and I had lunch.
After lunch, Luke headed off to play some more while I cleaned up the kitchen. While in the kitchen, I heard some "racket" in the family room. I headed in there to see what Luke was doing.
To my surprise, he had cleaned out his "hat drawer" (yes, he has a drawer for his ever-growing hat collection) and was using the drawer as a basketball goal for one of his balls.
Kids and creativity amaze me....Where did Luke come up with that idea? Has he seen another child do that? Or, was that all in his mind?
I haven't shown him that. And, since basketball season is still kind of in pre-season games, we haven't had a lot of basketball on TV yet.
Pretty clever....I'm hoping ideas like that "pop" into his head throughout the winter. Something tells me I'll need to help that creativity along a bit :)

Luke, once again, ate breakfast in his "Choo-Choo" hat. He also ate with a few assorted cars (also becoming the norm).
After he finished a decent breakfast, I allowed him to have some juice (he doesn't get juice with breakfast because that's probably all he'd have)....I actually don't mind him having a sippy cup in the family room, but for some reason lately, he's been into having juice in the kitchen. But, this time, he chose to be out of his booster seat.
Here are a few of the things the kids did this morning to entertain themselves. Sometimes, I do admire their ability to come up with things to do. Other times, it's clear they're bored, and I need to be a bit more intentional in coming up with things to do.
Lily -- playing with blocks....She actually did this for quite awhile.
Lily -- waving a flag....Luke did this as well, but I didn't get a photo. Also, if you notice that Lily is carrying a blanket -- it's one of Luke's. She insisted on having a blanket this morning, probably because she saw Luke with him blanket.
Both Luke and Lily tend to like to play with seatbelt buckles (on the booster seats). This morning was no exception, but I do think that Lily beat out Luke on this one this morning (Luke wasn't as interested in that today).
Both kids had their mid-morning snack of cheese crackers and water.
Luke, like a true boy, insisted on rolling his cars through the chair slats and making the cars CRASH to the floor -- over and over again.
Lily played with the telephone -- I think she called her Daddy maybe nothing short of 50 times -- VERY CUTE!
Toward the end of the morning, I turned on one of our Praise Baby DVDs....Lily didn't really care about it. Luke, on the other hand, settled down for a bit with his blanket and thumb :)
After Lily left at noon, Luke and I had lunch.
After lunch, Luke headed off to play some more while I cleaned up the kitchen. While in the kitchen, I heard some "racket" in the family room. I headed in there to see what Luke was doing.
To my surprise, he had cleaned out his "hat drawer" (yes, he has a drawer for his ever-growing hat collection) and was using the drawer as a basketball goal for one of his balls.
Kids and creativity amaze me....Where did Luke come up with that idea? Has he seen another child do that? Or, was that all in his mind?
I haven't shown him that. And, since basketball season is still kind of in pre-season games, we haven't had a lot of basketball on TV yet.
Pretty clever....I'm hoping ideas like that "pop" into his head throughout the winter. Something tells me I'll need to help that creativity along a bit :)

Luke Randoms, Part 3....

For today's photos, I'll first mention that all BUT one photo is from last night (after yesterday's post).
After supper last night, I pulled out the VERY FEW crafting supplies I own (nope -- I'm not crafty, and I will probably never claim to be). I do not own too many supplies at this point in time.
I had already cut out some "L" shapes as well as a few photos of items which start with the letter "L."
First, I had Luke glue on a few things to an 8.5" X 14" piece of paper.
Then, I pulled out some stickers and crayons, and I let Luke go to work.
Luke's not for coloring for long periods of time (at least as of yet), but he did for a bit. And, he most definitely, of course, liked the stickers.
The final product....A placemat (after I covered it with Con-Tact paper) with the letter "L" and a few pictures of "L" things (including "Luke").
Personally, I envisioned Luke's little project as having a bit more color and such, but I let him color until he was ready to stop coloring (which wasn't very long). So, even though it wasn't exactly as I envisioned, it's Luke's project. Therefore, I'm happy with that.
And, this morning, for breakfast, he ate on this placemat. He seemed pretty excited when he realized what he had made -- he noticed himself right away on the placemat.

Jumping back to last night -- Luke spent some time in a dining room chair. He's been doing that lately; I think it's for no other reason that "he can."
He sat in the chair, eating crackers, while wearing two hats.
And then, Luke "lounged" in the dining room chair....I was thinking that wasn't suppoed to happen until teenage years, but perhaps I'm wrong on that one.
Believe it or not, that's all I have for now....

Luke Randoms, Part 2....

This morning was filled with some simple "hanging out at home" as well as the normal Monday Morning Grocery Shopping for the Friesen Household.
After I got out of the shower and was getting ready, Luke hung out a bit with me in the bedroom.
This following photo is not posed....he was very much watching Elmo on Sesame Street at the time.
There's one big thing to look for in this photo, and it's really only important probably to Marc and me....
If you look closely underneath his sippy cup, you'll see a coaster.
"Why is that important," you might ask?
Nearly all of the time, when I go and take a shower, I have something really cold or something really hot with me (today -- it was hot tea in a regular ol' mug). So, I nearly always take a coaster with my drink of choice with me in the bathroom. Luke obviously has observed that.
When I got out of the shower, he immediately ran and got his sippy cup and brought back a coaster.
Apparently now, one, including Luke, must ALWAYS use a coaster with his or her beverage in our home :) Thanks Luke for that observation!

While I was finishing up getting ready, Luke did his usual and got our shoes out of our closet. Usually, he puts on Marc's shoes. Today, however, he was putting on my Keen sandals.

Later on, in the kitchen, Luke was caught looking through his Papa Book. The Papa Book is a homemade book I made him. It has photos of close family members and close friends. I created it so that Luke would learn to identify and say names of people who we associate with quite a bit. It's been a very good thing for him. We call it his Papa Book since generally, he's wanting to see Papa's picture (my dad).
(And Andrea -- in this first photo, he's looking at Ava's picture).

Then, we headed to Wal-Mart to grocery shop....
And yes, that's Marc's University of Texas visor around his neck -- a favorite of Luke's.

When we got home, I had Luke decorate a birthday card for his Grandma Friesen (Marc's mom)....Today's her birthday, and I'm a day late on getting cards out to her. And nope -- I wasn't crafty enough to actually make a card for her (I'm not the crafty type). So, Luke decorated a store-bought card -- which I know she will be very pleased with his decorating :)
And, as you can see, Luke did his decorating with a pile of his little cars very much near him.
Here's the final product -- I did my best (unsuccessfully) to keep stickers and crayon marks OFF of words in the card. But again, Marc's mom won't mind (and I'm 99% sure of that).
And very soon after that, we got that card in the mail....She should receive it tomorrow.
(Don't worry -- Marc's mom will not see this card ahead of time because it's on this blog....They're not internet users).
